The National Witness Project (NWP) was founded on a simple, powerful principle: In church, people witness to save souls; at The Witness Project, we witness to save lives.
Starting as a grassroots community outreach initiative focused on breast and cervical cancer education, NWP grew into a vital health equity network. Driven by culturally competent Community Health Workers (CHWs) and patient navigators, NWP built deep trust across medically underserved neighborhoods. Over the years, our programming expanded beyond cancer screenings to address broader systemic health disparities, including mental health awareness, chronic disease prevention, and direct healthcare system navigation.
As our team worked on the frontlines in Buffalo, New York, a fundamental reality became clear: preventative healthcare cannot stop at clinic doors. Sustainable community health requires direct access to nutritious, affordable food, economic opportunity, and neighborhood investment.
To address preventable chronic conditions at their root, the National Witness Project expanded its mission by serving as the sole member non-profit behind Project Rainfall, LLC. Located in the heart of Buffalo’s East Side—an area historically impacted by food insecurity and a lack of fresh food retail—Project Rainfall was conceived as a multi-disciplinary urban agriculture and community wellness engine.
Controlled-Environment Agriculture: Utilizing urban aquaponics and indoor farming systems to produce fresh, high-quality fruits, vegetables, and fish year-round with minimal environmental footprint.
Community Farmer’s Market & Daily Food Access: Establishing a dedicated market and retail space to ensure fresh produce is directly accessible to East Side residents.
Teaching Kitchen & Economic Empowerment: Providing hands-on culinary nutrition classes, community event spaces, and rental facilities for local culinary entrepreneurs and food truck operators.
Health & Economic Mobility: Integrating NWP’s Community Health Worker model directly with food distribution to create a centralized hub for wellness, education, and neighborhood economic growth.
